Hi, Mark Amantadine 100 mg. B.I.D. has been added to my Sinemet/Comtan meds for dyskinesia while I am on a 2.5 year wait list for DBS. Is Amantadine okay to take for that long? Will its effectiveness wear off eventually? Any side effects, drug interactions or lab tests to be aware of? My daily total of Comtan is 1000 mg. Is that alot? Like wise, are there any side effects, drug interactions or lab tests to be aware of? Thanks, as always, for your knowledge! Sue

amantadine is a safe med even for long term use. It does not seem to west off in pd because they are using it for it's anti viral effects. The only real side effect is some dry moth and stomach upset. Remember, this is like Many other pd meds, it takes time to work. Best of health, Mark

Hi Mark, I have a question re: timing of taking Amantadine with Sinemet. I am currently taking 25/100 Sinemet, 1 1/2 tablets 5 X a day. My doctor recently prescribed 100mg Amantadine once a day in the morning on a trial basis. If no side effects, he will increase it to twice a day. Can I take the Amantadine at the same time I take the Sinemet? Or, should I take one then wait an hour or so before taking the other? If so, does it matter which I take first? Thank you, Tonya

there are no drug interaction between the 2 medications. You can take them at the same time if the amantadine is being used for tremor, muscle tone, or abnormal muscle movements due to pd. If it is being used for sinemet induced dyskensia, it is best take about 1/2 hour after the sinemet. Best of health, Mark
