Trying to understand Sinemet dosage?

So, if I'm on 2 10/100's, is that saying that I'm taking 20/200 of Sinemet or not? I've been given a new dosage of the 25/100's to use at my discretion to lessen the "off" times. I guess, I don't really understand how the drugs work. So, if I just take 1 25/100, I'm getting MORE of the Carbodopa part but less of the levodopa BUT more the L-dopa is crossing the blood brain barrier so I should, in theory, need LESS, right?

So, can I just take 1 25/100 and expect the same or even better results as 2 10/100's? Or am I all messed up? My doc suggested taking 1 10/100 and 1 25/100. Does that equal 35/200 then?

I'm sorry, I know that that probably seems stupid and obvious, but, I'm not really sure what I'm doing and it's still weeks until I get in to see the MDS (if I get in at all!). My doctor is doing the best that he can, but, he is, after all only a GP.

Thanks, in advance, for all of your wonderful advice!!

Okay, clearly I've asked the dumbest question EVER!! I'm sorry. I just don't know, exactly how to answer the new doctor I'm going to see here soon when I'm asked what dosage I'm taking. Do I say that I'm taking 35/200 or do I say that I'm taking 1 10/100 and 1 25/100? I guess, that's really what I need to know.

Sorry for being so stupid.....thanks, though!!!

Hi. I can't answer the addition questions you have but I can give you advice on what you need to tell your doc. Do not add anything together. Give your doc a complete list of what pills you take when (i.e. one 10/100 and 1 25/100 at such and such a time.) The pills take effect differently and while related need to be specified.

Thank you. THAT is actually, EXACTLY what I needed to know. So, I should NOT say "I'm on 35/200" then, as that wouldn't make sense to the doctor. I'll just tell him that I take 1 10/100 and 1 25/200 3 times a day. Perfect. Thank you!!!!

Mark-

Can I ask you one more question about my Sinemet, real quick (LOL)? Does the one 25/100 take the place of two 10/100's? Because I'm not feeling as much "relief" as I did on two 10/100's....but, I'm also not feeling as tired and loopy either. I know that the one dosage only has 100 of dopamine and the other has 200, but, doesn't the 25 of carbidopa help the dopamine cross the BBB better, etc? I'm trying to manage my own meds, essentially, until I get in to see the MDS. Any help here is appreciated!! Thanks!!

actually the carbidopa is added to the levodopa to limit nausea. Levodopa by itself in higher doses can cause nausea and vomiting. Originally, the dose of levodopa a person need was figured out by giving the patient small doses every 15 minutes until they vomited. Then the dr would subtract the last dose and that is what the patient took. Later, the cabidopa was found to limit the nausea and was added to the levodopa so that much higher doses could be used. That is how sinemet got its name. The "emet" is short for emetic, which means to vomit.

There is your history lesson for the day and I hope it helps.
