I take carbidopa/levo er tabs 25/100 1 pill 3x daily also azilect tab 0.5mg once a day and trihexyphnidyl 2mg 1/2 a pill 2 x a day. I have been off mirapex for about 6 days and can't seem to get out of bed in the morning. I'm very emotional and seem to be in some kind of cloud. When i first stated taking the trihexyphnidyl OMG i thought I was back in the 60's if you know what I mean i'm starting to handle it better but i still don't feel safe driving and next week she wants me to take it 3x a day. Not sure if i should i do drive home from work. All that said am i going through withdrawal from the mirapex or just adjusting to the trihexyphnidyl? I feel like crap.

I am not the pharmacist, but I did have mirapex withdrawal. It was awful. I basically stepped from 1.0 mg 3x day to 0.5 mg 3x day. I wasn't on any other pd drugs, so I know it was all related to the mirapex change. I spent 10 days feeling HORRIBLE! My pd symptoms were awful. I was shaky, had new tremors, was stiff, couldn't move, limpy on my left side, you get the picture. Overall, I just didn't feel well in general. I was exhausted but I couldn't sleep. I called my neuro on day 10 to beg for help. He said 1 more day and the next day everything was better. It was so much better so quickly that I say it's like coming off of speed or meth or something. Anyway, I'm sure everyone's experience is different, but I bet it's the mirapex. Hang in there!

Please don't drive when you are feeling un-integrated. The ultimate tradgedy is being responsible for loss of life resulting from thinking that driving with Parkinson's is a courageous and independent thing to do. Unfortunately, I learned this the hard way. The book "Once upon a pill: Medications of Parkinson's" has been most useful to me for understanding and regulating dosage. It is available for free download, at the "Parkinson's Recovery Project" website. Blessings

first, don't go off any med without advise from m your dr. That "bubble" could be a combo of the mirapex and trihex. Each can cause that feeling but when you add the two together it can have an additive effect (1+1=3) with that side effect. Also, try to only chase one medication at a time. If you are increasing 1 and decreasing another and adding on a third medication you will never know which medication or scinero is causing the issue. Best of health, Mark

first off, if you decide to go off the mirapex do it slowly. If you were on 2mg at night, this is what you need to do. Do 1.5 mg at night for 1 week, 1 mg at night for 1 week, 0.5 mg at night for 1 week, then 0.5 mg every other night for 1 week. Then you should be ok to go off of it. If you dr says you need it and there is nothing else he can do, you need to find another dr. As you can see from your research this is a side effect of the medication in some people. This side effect will go away when the dose is decreased and/or stopped. Please let your husband know this. I have seen marriages break up over this. Let him read the posts on this site or look up the info on the Internet together. Also, bring him into the dr's office with you. Let him tell the dr. One of the most important things you can do is to bring your caregiver or loved one with you. They see things about you that you will never see about yourself. I wish you the best and hope that your husband will be understanding and open minded about this issue. Best of health, Mark

My husband has been on Mirapex for about 4 years for RLS. He has had a heart attack and has sleep apena, he cannot use the CPap machine. Yesterday he started taking Requip, doc changed his meds because he was having to take more and more of the Mirapex. He did not sleep at all last night, he took it this evening and is ready to jump out of his skin. He finally said "I don't care if I die, I can't go on like this" and took Mirapex too. I'm so worried he is going to kill himself. What should I watch for as adverse reactions?

obcessive compulsive issues are a big deal. I think the issue is much deeper. Why is he not sleeping? Why can't he use the machine? What other meds is he taking? Does he have diabetes? Many times an effect of diabetes is nerve issues in the legs and feet. This may be another cause of the leg issues. If other medical issues are not tended to, other issues can arise. I think he needs a complete physical check up from his primary dr. Please go with him, your words can help a great deal. Best of health, Mark

I am in withdrawal from Mirapex after taking it for two and one half years. Total dose distributed over the day was less than 1 mg. I have ultra= sensitivity to medications in general and finally realized that the Mirapex was wreaking havoc in my life when my doctor me to double my dose at bedtime. I woke up in terror in the middle of the night- skin was so hypersensitive I could barely tolerate it. Other side effects over the past two plus year have been insomnia, edema, mild nausea, the skin thing. I found out with research after I doubled the bedtime dose that I was also suffering from compulsive behaviors, e.g. binge eating like a fiend ( gained over 50 pounds in two years and could not stop it no matter what I did. I was also shopping compulsively and watching TV and using the computer same. My doctor recommeded I go off pretty much all I once. I did titrate for one day. He assured me that I would not experience withdrawal. However, after 6 or so hours of relatively restlful sleep, I awoke to sever chills, teeth chattering shaking for 2 hours followed by3 hours under two down comforters with an amzing amount of heat in this poor body. My vision is compromised, I feel spacey and unsteady on my feet. Awful! So far anyway. I am afraid to call my PCP doctor or the sleep disorders specialist because both are gung ho drug prescribers and I am too sensitive ( have long history of trying anti depressants, anti seizure meds, mood stabilizers, etc. and they all bring on symptoms with a couple of days. Won't go back on any of those kinds of medications no matter what. The RLS symptoms are fairly vicious but so fair, there isn't any question about which I am choosing. Any advice on how to slow this down without going back on Mirapex would be greatly appreciated. With kind regards, Kate Mazetier

Kate, I feel for you! Hang in there; it took at least 2 weeks for me. I HAD to stop it quickly when I discovered that I was pregnant. I felt just like I belonged in a methadone clinic or the film Trainspotting. I know the spacy feeling like a brain fog and then an invisible force pulling me toward the ground; I had wracking headaches, gnawing inside my gut, sweating, chills, etc. I slept for hours on end during the day because that's the only relief I had. Doctors don't believe that Mirapex causes this, but they don't know, unless they try it themselves, do they? Withdrawal effects are clearly documented by many on the Internet. Please see Mark, our pharmacist's recommendation for going off Mirapex above. I don't see this is "going back on" but more a safe way to gently ease your body and brain off this horrible drug. Do NOT let your doctors talk you into any more drugs unless they put you on the lowest possible therapeutic dose that has you building up over a course of weeks, not days. I also have a sensitivity to drugs and when I had to start again with a drug, my neuro had me titrate up over a period of six weeks- I hardly noticed any side effects at this rate. Hang in there! You will feel "normal" again :) Laura

kate, The issue of titrsting and withdraw affects is much worse in hypersensitive people. What I recommend for you is: 3/4 orig dose daily for 7 days 1/2 orig dose daily for 7 days 1/4 orig dose daily for 7 days 1/4 orig dose every other day for 7 days if needed...1/4 orig dose every 3rd day for 7 days This should help with the issues you have been experiencing. Best of health and hang in there, Mark

Hi everyone, I have just been told by my dr. to go off Mirapex completely. I have been taking 1 mg 3x day, so I am very nervous about the withdrawal symptoms. I am not taking anything else for PD either. The reason is I am having terrible chest pains (which at first I told my dr. it was the Mirapex and he said it wasn't.....now obviously he thinks it is). My symptoms of PD that I am going through right now are foot cramps/spasms and a very painful right shoulder - and a tremor in my right hand. The only thing this Mirapex has helped me with is getting use back of my right hand (before, I couldn't even move it to type). I am scared I am going to lose use of it again. The cramps started after taking the Mirapex - I hope they stop. I feel like a mess. I don't understand why he isn't trying me on something else. Has anyone else's doctor just stopped their medication all together?

Hi Kelly, I think it's fairly common for doctors to try different meds and I think it's common to have you stop one drug altogether before starting another. He may want to re-examine you au naturel (unmedicated) before he tries you on a different drug. Don't worry- you WILL feel better. All of this is really trial and error; we all go through it when switching meds. Do you see a Movement Disorder Specialist? I would recommend it as I think they're more experienced with what we go through and meds. Has he given you a schedule to stop taking it gradually? If he has you going cold turkey- don't do it, and definitely seek a new doctor. Hang in there. Not all of us experience Mirapex withdrawal and some of us not so severely. My experience was compounded by the fact that I took Klonopin, Mirapex, and Sinemet- I had to stop all drugs too rapidly as it was the first trimester of my pregnancy; I think my system went into a bit of shock. This forum is good in so many ways but can make us anxious or ready to freak out when we read of bad experiences of others. I think the main thing to be aware of is that you may have a worsening of existing symptoms like tremor when you stop taking it. You may also have what seems like new symptoms pop up. Try not to let the ramped up symptoms you may experience freak you out; remember that stress is not our friend. If your symptoms do intensify; it is temporary- they will level off. You'll then feel more alert (no more icky brain fog) and I bet you'll notice the cramps go away too. If you presented with a tremor as first sign of PD, your tremor will be there- but know that you will be able to use your right hand again! Your neuro has to find the right drug for you; Mirapex is not it. Please know that you're not alone- I have to go through stopping this drug, again- I foolishly let my neuro put me back on it post-pregnancy. Not only do I hate the way it makes me feel, I get no benefit from it. I'm hoping that I won't have such a bad time this round. Kelly, please feel free to e-mail me at numnum06(at) gmail(dot)com. I'd love to chat with you more about the unique challenges we face being new moms and we can commiserate through this Mirapex thing too. :) Best to you, Laura

Thanks for the message Laura. I have decided not to quit the Mirapex cold turkey, but to decrease it slowly. I will definitely email you. I thought with all of my nieces and nephews I was prepared for motherhood - not the case. I wish I could wake up one day and not worry about my PD and put all of my energy into my baby. I have RLS and FMS was prescibed mirapex and over time it seems to have actually worsened my symptoms. I told my doctor that I don't want to take this medicine anymore. I was never informed how to stop taking this drug so I went cold turkey and began to sleep walk and crash into objects and the other night fell down my stairs I am all banged up also had nightmares that caused me to scream god know what in my sleep. I dont think certain meds are carefully studied or else they did the math and the money was too good... Good luck to all you PD sufferers you are in my prayers - Donna

I will let you know that going cold turkey is much worse on your body than if you were to start the medication at the max dose. Please be careful. Remember if it takes a slow increase to start the med than it will take the same time to go off of it. Best of health, Mark

I was told by my Neurologist 6 weeks ago that I was to come off Mirapex and start Sinemet straight away. I was taking 0.7mg 1/3x a day, he reduced that to 2/ 0.18mg 2x a day plus 1/ 0.7mg at night, plus Sinemet 62.5mg 1/3x a day.Dosage hasn't changed since i wonder how long it will take before I am finished with Mirapex completely and just go with Sinemet.Over the last few weeks I have been moody and very sensitive over little things but tremor has eased slightly can it be Sinemet taking effect or the weanng off Mirapex.Best wishes Emma

that is completely up to your dr how long you should taper off. It depends on your history and length on mirapex. The taper off can take anywhere from 1 week to up to 1 month( which is rare. You really need to ask your dr. Best of health, Mark

I have been on Mirapex for 6 years now. I take .75 at nightime only. Doc took me off yesterday, I hadn't been sleeping for the last few days and last night was horrific. I was hallucinating and could not relax and had new doby jerks everytime I went to lie down. I have been in an upright position for the last 12 hours. He gave me lunestra to sleep, didn't have a reaction from that at all. waiting for him to call to suggest i wean this mirapex off gradually.

mirapex is a medication that you need to tapper off. If not, the side effects can be very bad, as you found out. No matter what you try to take to Allen or relax will not work because your system is in withdraw from the mirapex. Depending how long you were on it, it could take a while for the med to be out of your system. Best of health, Mark
