I have very painful fibromyaliga. 2 mos ago, lyrica was aproved for treatment. I was started on 50 mg 3 times daily. I still had some pain. The dose was changed to 100mg 3 times daily. This awful itching started soon after. I have no pain. The itching is so bad I can't stand it. What can be done for the itching?

Hi Aley.

I did Lyrica last summer at similar doses and never had problems, but I think I remember reading a post a while back with similar itching problems. The itching was thought to be an allergic reaction. I would contact your doc and see if maybe 100 mg 3xday has gone the opposite direction for you and is too strong. Maybe reducing your rx to 75 mg 3xday would provide you the pain reduction benefit without the itch. Or maybe 100 mg 2x day? I'm just not sure that once the itching has started that even reducing the dosage would relieve it- but perhaps it would. Neurontin is another nerve pain med similar to Lyrica, has your doc ever tried you on it? Definitely tell your doc asap- maybe you need to stop it altogehter. good luck!

pain and itch receptors are all within the same systems. That are regulated by the same chemicals within the body. A couple of things that could ne happening here:
1. It could be an allergic reaction to the medication. Usually when an allergic reaction takes place, a rash will be present on the torso and spread from there. This reaction usually happens on the first 48 to 72 hours.

2. The dose could by just a tad to high. When this is the case, the nerve become more sensative which, in turn, can cause "supersensation." this can result I'm itching and agitation. This will usually go away when the dose I'd decreased or when a lower dose is used and spread put more times a day.

If the problem out weighs the benefit, you may want to talk to your dr about possibly changing to Neurontin. Aedication that can ne used for the type of nerve issues.

Best of health,
