I am a 62 year old lady who has just been prescribed sinemet by my neurologist. I am concerned about taking this because of dyskinesia. I do want the relief now but I do not want to do something that will create serious problems later. Please advise. Thank you, Jan Thurman thurman@netcommander.com

it is a great medication when used correctly. the dyskensia is usually experienced at higher doses but can occur at loer doses depending on the severity of the symptoms. Try it as directed by your physician. if you experience the dyskensia, contact your dr. in many people it is dose realted. the higher the dose, the greater the chance of side effects. always rfemember that there are other meds that can also be effective. please give the medication a chance. it could really increase your quality of life, which is what we all want.

Hi; I was recently diagnosed as having parkinsonism. The MDS reported that I had an unuual presentation of parkinsonism and signs that are not typical of idipathic PD although this cannot be ruled out. I am scheduled for other testing, however to treat my symptoms which are all right sided, rigidity and jerking movements-side to side finger tremors (which she found not typical tremors) ankle rigidity and toe curling etc.,etc., she has prescribed a course of l-dopa.I have been taking 1/2 tablet (100/25) daily for a week now and increasing over a month to 2 tablets (100/25) three times daily. I have not experienced any side effects, however I have not experienced any improvements in my symptoms. I have read so much about sinemet and how quickly it begins to work. Should I assume that since I see no change after a week, it is not going to work for me? Would that be an indication that I do not have true PD? I know that I am being impatient but was so hopeful that what I have could be explained once I started sinemet. I have had these symptoms for over 8years, I was in my mid-40's, am now almost 54 now and have seen two neuros who gave me preliminary dx's of PD. Thanks for your advice, Annmarie

Actually Sinemet is my favourite drug,Ive been on it since 94,apparently its suppose to loose its effectiveness over the years, not so here, then again it could be the requip and the Azilect I take with it.My doctor said from the very beginging go slow and low on this drug, yes Ive had bouts of dyskansia (and I hate it) but thats only because I didn,t take food with it or I accidently doubled up on the dose (brain fog, forgot I already took that hours meds). My dose is 100/25 so its nice and low,its like fine tuning a car you have to fiquire out what dose works for you,not one size fits all,Ive been self medicating myself for years,my doctor says if it works for you go for it

of is true with most pd medications that slow and steady will win the race. Start low and go slow. When tjq aymora are gone you have reached the plateau. Best of health, mark
