Any thoughts on the supplement Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10)? I read a short article in the Mayo Clinic's guide to alternative medicine, and they said that in the studies so far, it appeared to be effective in reducing Parkinson's symptoms. Of course, I would never take any supplement or drug without discussing it with my doctor first, but my question is; what's the down side? What are the possible side effects, if any? Also, I wonder what the dosage should be, because I also read somewhere that it's not effective in smaller doses. Is this something one buys at a vitamin/health food store?

Thanks,
Marian

When I was first diagnosed I read an article about CQ10, My neurologist was OK with me trying it. I took 400mg three times a day. I ordered the coQ10 from enzymatic therapies. They will give you a discouunted price. (It's not cheap) Try www.vitalinecoq10.com I also have a toll free number if you are interested
I took 1200mg/day for about a year. I don't know if it helped or not. My symptoms have not progressed very fast though. I quit taking it because I started to feel fuzzy. I will still take it sometimes when I feel more shaky than usual and it seems to help.

ukelady,

It won't hurt at all to try it. I have seen it work on some people with very good results. I always recommend that you seperate any supplements or vitamins from your other medications by a couple of hours so there is no chance of an interaction.

My husband was just diagnosed in Oct. His neuro told him to take 800mg/day if our pocket book allowed. She said it wouldn't help him immediately but would help him in the long term. She also said to find the COQ10 with the Vitamen E in the pill. It will be more effective.

kb,

It has been shown in a small study group to help with the stiffness and ragidity issues os PD. It is because of those finding that a larger study is being condutes as we speak.

Guys, Diagnosed at age 37 with PD. Started on 3 by 50Mg COQ10
a day along with 2 Sinemet (yellow) 100/25 a day. I am still working as a large scale Speech Recognition Support Engineer and driving to work in peak hour traffic each day. The medication has increased over the 14 years since diagnosis. It is now 3 by 50Mg COQ10, 6 * Sinemet CR (salmon) 200/50, 1 Sinemet (yellow) 100/25 at breakfast. A Cabasar 4mg at Breakfast, 3 Comtan a day 1 with each meal, and 2 Simetrel 1 at lunch time and one at dinner time. The Sinemet CR are taken every 2.5 Hrs
My PD is very slow moving changing very little over time compared to several other YOPD people I know. Sure I have slow periods for the last 15 minutes in the 2.5 hr cycle. Taking the next CR early results in the wriggles starting at about 30 minutes in to net 2.5 hr period. These last for about 1 hour. Better to be slow for 15 Mins. than wriggling.

I work with my Neurologist as a team we adjust my drugs and I train him on Speech activation of his Apple PC to type the spoken contents of his customer visits. We have the PC able to recognize 90% of the spoken words.

The drugs take about 1 Hr to kick in each day before it is safe to drive. I travel to Africa and New Zealand as well as all over Australia in a 4WD truck. PD is just a speed regulator that forces me to take things slower and enjoy the
view more. PD can be managed just keep comprehensive notes while tuning the drug mix to find one that works for you.
We are all different and our drugs will differ. If it works don't make large changes as the results may vary greatly. Just go with the flow and tune in small steps. It helps if your employer is aware that you are changing medications this way they will be obliging if you need to lay down, or get a taxi home, or arrive late. My typing speed has dropped from 80Wpm down to under 10Wpm I discussed this with my manager and we agreed to hire a understudy to do my typing and to learn all I know about Speech Recognition. I can work from home if needed. My Customers all know about my PD and I have never had any adverse comments from them. They joke about how slow I move in the slow period. Be open about PD with your friends and Co workers as together as a team we can still deliver the support the organization requires to be the number one Speech Support Company in Australia.

Keep taking COQ10 as the preservation of the whole body is important as you only get one body so you need to look after it. PS; Grow some broad beans. They have to be fresh not canned, Cook them in a steamer just enough to still be crisp. These beans are rich in Dopamine. You can skip the last CR dose after a good feed of beans

Hi,
IT IS VERY INTERESTING TO READ ABOUT Q10. I WENT TO SEE MY DOCTOR 3 DAYS AGO AND WHEN I ASKED HIM ABOUT Q10 HE WASN´T NEGATIVE ANYWAY.... SO NOW I WILL TRY THIS. - I WAS THOUGH A LITTLE ASTONISHED ABOUT THE AMOUNT OF WHICH YOU WERE TAKEN THIS PILL.... ON MY BOX IT IS WRITTEN THAT YOU SHOULD NOT OVERDOSE - AND THAT IS NOT MORE THAN ONE PILL A DAY AT 30 MG.....

at this point with this disease I think many of us would try just about anything to increase our quality of life , even if it is just a small amount.
