Hello all,

I was just wondering if anyone has had any symptoms involving their feet?I seem to have developed a problem with my right foot and I'm not sure if it's something I should tell my neuro about.I do a lot of walking and on occasion it seems I haven't lifted my foot enough and it catches on the path, like it's digging into the ground.I'm sorry I know it's a bad description but I'm really not sure how to describe it.

If anyone has had similar problems or can even describe it better than I, I would love to hear from you.

Kind regards,

Gena

Hi Gena,

I often shuffle my feet when I walk (taking very small steps), which causes me to not pick my feet up very far off of the ground. That leads to frequent trips. I have heard others here talk about a dragging foot, although I've not experienced that. Gait issues are certainly something to discuss with your neurologist as they are common with PD.

Gena-if the meds are not helping this, there are ankle braces that can be made that will prevent your toes from dropping while you walk so that your foot can clear the floor when you walk. They are called AFO's. Hope this helps.

Hi Gena,

I experienced a dragging or "bum foot" sensation pretty early on, like six years, before I was diagnosed. I noticed my right foot lagged a little and I began to have trouble keeping certain shoe styles on my feet- no flip flops for me ;) From what I understand, gait symptoms are not that uncommon. Check with your Neuro- I do know that my right foot symptom all but disappeared with levodopa therapy.

Gena,

I too experienced a very gradual leg/foot drag. The way I realized it is when I began jogging last year and kept stubbing my toe. This sympton reduced significantly when I began taking Azilect.

Good luck to you.

HI Gena - I definitely have that same problem, but with my left leg. I have a definite weird gait where I drag (limp) my left leg. When my meds are off I limp and shuffle (taking really small steps). But, on or off, I just don't lift my left foot high enough. I'm constantly tripping over doorway sills, parking lot blocks, curbs, steps. I just went with my kids to Sea World. I tripped on a step in Shamu stadium and fell onto a bleacher bench. It created such a bruise on my thigh that it was swollen like a big contusion. It now matches the contusion on my other thigh when I tripped on a step at a concert and hit a bleacher chair! Clearly I'm trying to have too much fun. :)

Hi Gena,
My right foot sometimes refuses to work, the other day I was out for a run (these days more like a waddle)and unexpectedly it just refused to lift. I remember watching the concrete approach thinking "man this is going to hurt". Gosh this is fun!
Best Wishes,
Dave

Gena,

I too have had similar problems. The left foot is the worst. In times of doubt, I do what the MDS/Neuro does, and that is to sit in a chair with feet flat on the floor and with my heel remaining on the floor, try to tap that foot as fast as can.

At Dx, I could do it well, then with time, it slowed, and now I can't do it at all without meds or being "off", and marginally with meds or being "on".

It's my opinion that if you try this "test" you will be able to establish a baseline for yourself and it will serve as an indicator as to when your meds are working, barely working, or not working.

That said, what you describe is a classic PD symptom and I would tell your Dr. about it. He/She is probably already waiting for this symptom to appear and for you Dr. to know it will aid him/her.

Others,

Please correct me or add as appropriate.

Thanks,

John Noland
