I am a newly registered member. So, hello. I was diagnosed about 3 month ago. Started taking requip XL. I was feeling awful the entire time on the med. . I have been off the med. for 2 weeks. Am starting to feel better, but experiencin extreme anxiety. Did anyone have a reaction or take requip? Also what about this terrible anxiety?

I have horrible anxiety, too, but, I've never taken Requip XL, I don't think. If it has a different generic name, then maybe. I've been put on everything (prior to DX) for depression and anxiety, with mixed results. I think that, in my case, the main reason why nothing worked completely, was because they weren't treating the underlying cause, the PD. I'm only on Sinemet and a prescription strength B12/Folate tablet, B-12 injections (I have Pernicious Anemia, too) and Mestinon (for my low BP and severe constipation). Nothing for anxiety right now. However, I'm going to see the doctor tomorrow and I hope that all goes well!!! Maybe, I'll finally get something for the anxiety, to go with all of my other PD meds! I'll let you know.

Hi Pinky,

I was dx 4 months ago and began taking Requip XL (extended release) about 2 months ago and I describe it as a small miracle (dramatic improvement in ridigity, sleep, mood). And no nausea!

There are dozens of side-effects (SE) "associated" (note they rarely say "caused") w/ Requip. Mine were initial sense of being stoned (first day only); illusions (hallucinations-lite 6 times); mild headaches (2 days); sore throat (2 weeks); hoarse voice (1 week); tightness in chest/shortness of breath (2 weeks and counting). For now I am continuing to take it because the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. My MDS and I are closely monitoring changes and titrating very slowly. Two mg for 2 wks, 4 mg for 2 wks, 6 mg for 4 wks...remember this is once-a-day XL.

The trick is figuring out what are legitimate SE of the drug versus effects of PD itself, or of my spring allergies, or of my asthma, or of a virus my darling germ-factories bring home from school (swine flu last week!).

As I have a whole month more experience than you (*smile*), my advice is to:
- consider trying an agonist (requip or mirapex) again but titrating VERY slowly if you didn't before
- consider switching from requip to requip XL (or vice versa). Just because one is intolerable doesn't mean the other will be. Eg...people who experience nausea w/ regular requip often don't w/ XL

Regarding the anxiety, I had it bad...before the agonist therapy. It may have been the med for you or it may be the underlying disease or a response to dealing with the dx and its fallout.

Wishing you well,
Rose

Hi Pinky,

One of my first symptoms was anxiety. It is a horrible feeling and I feel for everyone that has it. In Nov of 06 I started taking Sinemet and the anxiety went away until May of this year when my doc switched me to Stalevo and within 2 days the anxiety came back. Not sure why. You are not alone. Hang in there.

Pinky-
If I understand your timeline, you took Requip XL for two and a half months, had little anxiety problems before then, but was left with one after dropping it.

If you read Rose's post about her initial problems and how they disappeared with time, you see a good description of one's metabolism shifting to cope with the drug's undesirable effects. Once this shift is complete, if the drug is then dropped the shift back is not necessarily a mirror image of the initial experience. That's why titration on and off is important. Hopefully you have seen some improvement since your post.

This is also a good reason to resist changes in your meds unless you see a good reason for it.

Hi,
Just a general question about anxiety. Would you define someone having chest pains and a fast heartbeat as having anxiety? I have just been diagnosed and don't know if it is that or the side effects of the Mirapex I am on.

Hi Kelly,

I'm not a health care professional but you should speak with someone at your Dr.s office...(support nurse or Dr.) and ask them just to be on the safe side. I think it could be either of the things you mentioned but chest pain should be checked out or brought to your Doc's attention.... If it is anxiety....just not knowing what is happening to you will contribute to further anxiety...so...best to ask someone on your healthcare team. ...sometimes just getting answers can help calm things down too.

Good Luck
and best to you
