Sleep is a big issue. It gets even worse depending on your medication. I know a lot of people on this site take prescription sleeping pills. I am on mirapex .5 mg 3xday and amantadine 100 mg 2x day. My sleep was worse with mirapex and then worse again when I started amantadine. I take benadryl to sleep. Always at least 1 pill, sometimes 2. The benefit is that benadryl is also supposed to work on pd symptoms, it's not addictive, and it helps my allergies. I go to bed btwn 11 and 12 pm. I am always awake by 7, sometimes by 6. I was never a morning person. Before pd I slept from 11 pm until 10 am on weekends. Benadryl is first stage sleep defense. Check with your neuro for other options - it may not be strong enough. I am on Mirapex .75 mg 3x a day. i used to take Amantadine too but stopped when my neuro upped my dosage on Mirapex. Before I got sick, I slept only a few hours a night (1-3). Now, I am on Lorazapam -an anti-anxiety drug (1 mg) which I take at night. It helps make me sleep 4-5 hours straight. I also tried Benadryl but it didnt help . Take care.

Hi Debbie, In consultation with my MDS/Neuro, I have started to gradually phase out Mirapex. The main reason was lack of sleep. Although the medication helped with my stiffness and slowness, I haven't had more than 4 hours of sleep in 7 months. My dosage of Mirapex was .75mg, 3 x day. I was also taking Trazadone to help me sleep, however that only help for the 1st 3-4 hrs. As of tonight, I have started levocarb and will be phasing that in. - marc

first of all, nobody with pd sleeps, you need to get in a routine, after conan o brien show, you go too the local 24 hour walmart and shoot the breeze with the abused and under payed workers, you mention the word union too them in a very low voice,so management dosent hear you and you wont get banned from walmart for life, then you go to dennys and have coffee, by now it is 5am, you go home and fall alseep by 6am,only to wake up at 8am so you can watch the waltons on the hallmark channel, then at 10 am you take your first dose of pills, after that you go on pc and post messages which you think are funny, having pd for 13 years and lack of sleep compel you to do these kind of things

Well Jon I actually would go to Wal-Mart and talk to my friend on the Dallas Police Force working security. Debbie I fought it for a while but about 7 days ago started with Ambien 10 mg. Its the best week of sleep I have had in years and I get the generic.

I just had a DBS consullt, and was given a prescription for Clonazepam to help me sleep. I don't have it yet, but maybe someone else has heard of it. I use Tylenol PM to get to sleep, but I wake up several times each night.

Sleep.... overrated, who needs it? Seriously, we all do and it seems that PD can be a major complication to a satisfying snooze. I find that I have a great discomfort settle into my shoulders, tremor in left arm /leg if I initiate movement... add that to some swallowing discomfort and normal unwinding stress from the day any you've got a killer recipe for insomnia....modemdavidsparkinsonspage@blogspot.com
