Greetings. I frequently check this message board and find it invaluable! However I am stumped why "Matt DFW" keeps claiming that a nonPD med has helped him so much but cant find where he has mentioned it...somewhat teasing. I have tried to review many postings and cant find where he 'revealed' this drug...although many have asked him I never see a response.. Anyone (even Matt DFW) got a clue? My PWP goes to a nationally recognized Parkinson's Center and they have yet to suggest an "off label" drug.... Thanks

Hey Greg: At first I did not mention the drug because I was not sure how my Neurologist or Psychiatrist felt. For a few months now I have been public about the fact it is Lithium Carbonate. Please see the Dallas Morning News article of 8/16/08 for more info. Also check out post by me called "Decrease in Symptoms" last referenced 25-July-08 I would not dare tease nor hide a potential benefit to others...I just wanted to be responsible in my actions. Thanks

Having worked as a RN on a Forensic psychiatric unit for 13 years, I can tell you that Lithium is used to treat bipolar illness usually when in a manic phase. I've never heard of it being used for PD and would strongly advise against it. Please contact your physician. Trevor

Yes Trevor is correct, Lithium has a primary indication for bi-polar which is why I began taking it, however, in recent monthes and years studies are beginning to show that there are strong possible secondary indications for CNS diseases like ALS, PD, and even perhaps Alzheimers. As always a physician or physicians should administer and monitor each patients progress but this is no different then the medical community discovering that a medicine designed for cardiovascular care can grow hair or help sexual disfunction. Be responsible but don't be scared. We need all the help we can get.
