Hi. Hope someone has helpful advice....Pd has caused me to produce saliva to excess (drooling and a lot of nightime loss). Saliva contains bacteria which has caused infections and sores or lesions in both corners of my mouth. The infections. have spread down my chin on both sides so now it looks like a fu man chu mustache of scaly flaky sores.I m on my second course or antibiotics and the Dr has told me to apply polisporin and vaseline which I have done with no improvement in almost 2 weeks. I m on a waiting list to see a plastic surgeon.. to inject some of my own fat cells( I have plenty to spare) in the corners of my mouth to build up the tissue so the saliva wont escape so much. Pavlov's dog I am not! I am all kidding aside very depressed over this,; I look and feel awful Like all of us with PD, I have ongoing issues but this one really bothers me ... Any advice or suggestions?? Dave

Dave, I am so sorry to hear this has/is happening to you! I think I too have this problem. I do not have drooling issues, but have difficulty swallowing and pronouncing words at times as my throat feels loose and my tongue numblike and difficult to move correctly- have since 2006 (still no pd dx- yah I know this is taking forever!). I know about 3-4 months after these issues loose throat feeling, tongue slopping issues started I began having these hard, scaly/flaky type sores straight down from the corners of my mouth on my chin- that's where they always are! At first I thought they were hormone related, being woman of childbearing years still, but they aren't- they are there all the time! Of course my face is tightening up now and interesting that my dentist is now watching my gums as they have (in this same time period) receeded quite a lot... could it be that this is all from bacteria in my saliva from it pooling in my mouth kinda seeping/saturating the inside of my mouth and jaw, causing these sores as well as this new receeding gum line? Seriously, the dentist wants me to have gum grafts- has looked at my top and bottom gums and tells me I have no gums left below my lip areas so they'll have to graft them from the roof of my mouth.... all this in just 2 years?! I have not seen a dermatologist or anything- just duking it out with acne medications/washes and drinking lots of water and covering the sores up with mineral powder type foundations as the liquid type makeup just seems to make the sores worse. It sucks- I feel and know your pain and discomfort, and I'd do anything to get rid of this for good- I'm 37 and look like a 15 year old with some serious acne issues- ugh!!! Have you tried any acne medications- I do neutrogena facial wash in the liquid form- it helps (some). Many (((hugs))) Connie PS - gin and tonics aren't cutting the dystonia anymore- doc has started me on baclofen.. have you tried that? Doc isn't giving me a young pd dx as I have 'too much' dystonia- his words... seems to be a constant plague for me now and mild dyskinesia on/off now with my Requip dosing- still working on that one since doc switched me to the extended release- definitely better though, whew!

Hi, I've had sores on the corners of my mouth for years. In my case, I think it might be started by drool, but I also have lupus which makes rashes and infections worse. The corner of my mouth would split and bleed. I couldn't take a big bite w/o some bleeding. Is that what you're seeing? For years I used a steroid cream called aclovate. It never really fixed. Now my Dr said that it's probably a bad fungal infection made worse by the steroid. So, she put me on a combo antibiotic/antifungal called nystatin and triaminaclone. It's worked very well. You may have a worse problem than I do. If this is old news to you, then I'm sorry - this is what I've experienced. Hope it helps - Michelle

To the people with the problem of sores in the corner of mouth, I' too never had that problem til I started on PD meds. What has worked for me is to carry a small chapstickwith me at all times and use it as much as possible-use a mouthwash before bed I have dry mouth, too and that is a lot of the problem of receeding gums, csvities etc. And I dab vaseline in the corners of my mouth and have that or chapstick nex to my bed. I have found the hardest part of this regime is to keep it up. As soon as the sores and cracks heal-I forget -then it starts again' Oh also wanted to tell you I find acid foods (tomatoes ,etc) make it worse. Hope it will work for you,Brenda

Brenda- you have receeding gum issues too? I just saw the dentist for my regular checkup- have two new cavities (haven't had one in over 10 years!) and am headed to a gum doctor now for grafting evaluations for several of my teeth. How this all happened so fast- 3-4 years ago I had perfect gums and teeth, then my signs/symptoms went into mach 5 progression (lol- feels like it anyway!) and while I think I'm more drooly than before, during the dental exam the doc says my mouth is very dry?! So, you think the dry mouth is related to the gum and cavities... ugh! Hang in there- thanks for posting! ((hugs)) Connie

Wow, how ironic! I just had gum grafts done on 6 of my upper teeth. I have bottom teeth that have so little gum, you can see the arch between the root legs. I've been working on this for about 5 years. It started before pd meds. But, I do have dry mouth and acid reflux. So, tomatoes and acid foods make it worse. Michelle
