I saw Dr. Barenstein yesterday - great doc so I am glad I did not find one closer to home.

I am on Miraplex .125 mg for 2 weeks and am sposed to increase it over several more weeks to .5.

I'm sick though and can hardly stand how I feel, hot and sick to my stomache, dizzy.... will the side effects go away over time? I'm really scared. I don't really mind my tremors since they are only in the morning in my bed... so do I have to take this stuff?

My main complaint is the depression and constipation...will Miraplex help this? Could I be taking a laxative?

I have so many questions but can't quite form the thoughts or get the energy to ask them right now. I think i am in shock.

Any experiences you share would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Patti, Sorry about your recent diagnosis; my experiences were similar when I was diagnosed 4 yrs ago. My requip and levo carb caused stomach upset and sleepiness... perhaps the doseage is a little too much for you... talk to your Dr about this...maybe you can take less to start with. Depression and constipation are common with p d patients. Again depression should only be treated by your Dr. perhaps with antidepressants or theropy. Constipation can be mitigated by drinking lots of water and exercise such as walking. I take occasional stool softeners but in general I avoid harsh laxatives.Hope this helps. For your info look back through the archived meessages, you will find great information which may help you as a newcomer. Best wishes, hope this helps..... Dave

Hi Patti
So sorry to hear about your diagnosis and that you are going through a tough time with your medication. Do give your doc a call and let him know what's going on with you. I am on Amantadiine which initially made me sick too. I have been on it for 3 months now and there’s only very little improvement. As far as constipation goes, I use Miralax (not Miraplex) when I have this problem. I also take Metamucil , drink lots of water and do exercises. I am not taking any med for depression, but I do meditate everyday to help with my anxiety. Hope this helps. Take care.

Thank you, guys, for your response. The Mirapex only made me sick the first night and perhaps I was sick from the shock of the dx news. I am only on a very low dose but I feel better as far as the depression goes - I drank Senna tea for the constipation and it worked very well!

I know I need to attend the support group functions in my area but I might not be 100% ready to admit to myself that I have this PK thing - my family members and neighbors are acting like I am really ill, (keep coming over/calling/emailing like I am on Hospice care or something) and I am not so sure whether or not to tell my music friends (I write songs).

Guess I really have alot to figure out. :(

Can't speak to Mirapex, my brother has early onset and is on carbo/leva at mega doses after 13 years (he is now 48). But I can speak to the constipation issue. This is obviously a difficult subject to talk about, deal with and SIT with problem. We have had success with Senna Syrup extract and Miralax. We were advised recently that, if it was earlier in PD dosages, that we should start with Go Lightly. We are well beyond that helping. So if it is early in PD years and dosage of medication, you could try Go Lightly first, then Miralax, before the more harsh stuff. Don't be afraid, like we were to ask your Neuro or a gastro guy. Please!! My brother suffered for 2 years with enemas or Phospa soda before we got to the comfortable conversation stage.
