How many of you people have PD and drive automobiles? I respond well to carbo/levo but have a lot of dyskinesia. I really don't think it hampers my driving, but my wife feels that if I am in an accident - my fault or not - as soon as the other party finds out I have PD they will sue us for all that we are worth & more. I have had PD symptoms since 2003 but was only diagnosed in April, 2005. I have been riving up until a few weeks ago.

I was actually found out by the DMV and they started to require me to retake my driving test (the actual road test) every year. I have only a tremor in my right hand and some level of dexterity loss. I have taken the test twice and passed both times. They have since told me I do not have to take the test unless my symptoms get worse. It was a pain and something my MDS had never heard of before. I had just been diagnosed and stupidly said something when the DMV worker noticed my tremor. Taught me quickly to keep my mouth shut. If you are nervous, you might want to go over it with your doctor and see what they say. If it is legal for you to drive, your insurance must cover you and they will be on your side. I do not know if you need to contact your insurance. Your rates would probably go up a lot.

My husband has PD. He has had two wrecks that were PD related, however, nobody at our insurance has said anything and has paid the claims. With this last wreck (in April), our premiums only went up $15. So all I can say is that we have had good luck with our insurance company, but I know not everyone else has had the same.

I've been thinking about this and since IANAL I don't know the facts. However, would it be against the ADA for an insurance company to increase your premiums if you have PD, especially if the DMV knows and is ok with you driving?
