I've lifted free weights on and off for the last 10 years or so. Now that I'm running less as PD progresses, I've taken up lifting wieghts a bit more frequently. Even though I'm really shaky both during and after exercise, I do feel better. Is anyone else lifting weights too? I know that at some point the free weights will become weapons, but I'm already so shaky that I'll likely cause lots of looks in a gym. Thoughts? Thanks!

Trying to keep from completely falling apart....do a little w/free weights....agree, that while I feel shakier after a workout there seems to be some positive effect after...
everything in moderation, even moderation....

Hi Steve-O

I too am about to cross that bridge...my feeling is it can't hurt.I currently train in martial arts Tang Soo. I have lifted all my life and I do not want to give this up. I recently cleaned my weight room up....I do have power rack to prevent dropping weights on my self and locking devices are always in use..I am going to switch from a power lifting to a building mode. Got my first set of weights at age 12 and I am 39 now...took a break through all this now it is time to get back!!! would be interseted in what routine or exercies you are planning you are going to attempt and results..if you would like to email me and compare notes let me know..it would be nice to have partner in this.. I live in Delaware. let me know and wish you the best!!

be well,
eric aka kman

Thanks, Eric! It sounds like you have a much better set-up than I do, but that's cool. I'd really like to trade notes sometime. It's been easier to bulk up a bit with being on creatine and without keeping my weight down for running (which I just really can't do any more). I couldn't see your e-mail on your profile, but mine should be visible--please drop me a line when you get a chance. Thanks again!

Thanks, Macaroni! That sounds very encouraging--I really appreciate the note. Do you work out at home or at a gym?

at home I actually think I would be self conscious of myself if at a gym and in turn not spend the time I need to work out

Steve-O et al,
I don't soley do weight training/lifting, but it is part of the program I've been involved with for the past year and a half. Weight training is one part of the boxing-based program I'm involved with. We punch speed bags, body bags; jump rope; do push ups and sit ups; jumping jacks; etc. 3-minutes on, 1-minute off. I can feel some muscle weakness, but this program helps over come that. I'm a strong believer in rigorous/any exercise for people with Parkinson's.

ABC (national) News is doing a story on the gym I'm involved with today - Wednesday, 3/5/08 - at 6:30 pm EST (check local listing for time). I'm very indebted to them regarding my health/progression. The non-profit facility is Rock Steady Boxing in Indianapolis, Indiana. The website is www.rocksteadyboxing.org

When I do weight lift, I'm very stiff and tired afterwards, but I do experience an overall improvement in my symptoms later on. Now that I have more of a tremor than I used to, I've noticed that I am more shaky afterwards than before, too, but benefit enough to continue.

Lizzy - It's too bad there isn't a Rock Steady Boxing everywhere! :p I'd go, but being pregnant kind of takes the fun out of it. heh!
